The Connected Caregivers Project
Supporting Those Who Care for Our Heroes
K and R’s Assisted Living is proud to lead the Connected Caregivers Project, a new initiative funded through the Virginia Department of Veterans Services’ Suicide Prevention and Opioid Addiction (SOS) Program. This statewide effort is designed to strengthen the emotional health, stability, and resilience of caregivers who are Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) — or who provide daily care to someone who is.

Why This Project Matters
Across Virginia, thousands of military-connected caregivers quietly shoulder the weight of supporting loved ones with medical, emotional, or trauma-related needs. The demands of caregiving often lead to exhaustion, isolation, and financial strain — all risk factors for depression and opioid misuse.
The Connected Caregivers Project recognizes that caring for those who served begins with caring for the caregivers themselves. By reducing burnout and providing connection, education, and relief, we can help families remain strong and healthy together.
What the Project Does
Our work centers on connection, access, and well-being.
The Connected Caregivers Project Offers:
-
24/7 Virtual Peer Support: A moderated online community where caregivers can share experiences, exchange encouragement, and access trusted resources anytime.
-
Respite Navigation & Coaching: Personalized guidance to help caregivers understand and apply for Virginia’s Medicaid Waiver and other paid respite programs.
-
Quarterly Wellness Events: In-person gatherings across Virginia that provide rest, connection, and education on stress management and opioid-risk prevention.
Each component is designed to meet caregivers where they are — whether online, at home, or in their local community.
Our Goals
-
Reduce caregiver stress and burnout that can lead to substance misuse.
-
Increase awareness and access to respite care and behavioral-health supports.
-
Build a sustainable peer network that promotes connection, confidence, and hope.
Over the next year, the Connected Caregivers Project will serve at least 125 caregivers across Virginia, helping them feel seen, supported, and equipped to continue their essential role in the lives of our Service Members and Veterans.
